Developing High Performance Teams2 daysClassroom

In a commercial environment where there is no such thing as business as usual, it is crucial to your competitive edge that managers gain maximum efficiency, flexibility and potential from their teams. Especially as today, teams cross functions and boundaries such as locations, time zones and cultures.

This course looks at the ingredients of a successful team and provides the tools that enable managers to make the most of their teams. Learners work using their Belbin Team Preferences profile to understand how they operate in a team, and to see how they could utilise others’ team preferences more effectively. We use team project across the two days to bring the concepts to life and allow us to examine a team in action.

The returning learners will benefit your organisation by:

  • Identifying the key tasks and activities involved in successful team working
  • Appreciating different styles of team working and their relative strengths
  • Gaining a greater understanding of their style of working and its impact on the team
  • Developing ideas and plans for helping their team achieve its full potential
  • Comparing experiences with others from varying backgrounds
  • Giving and receiving feedback on their performance as team members and leaders when working on a project
  • Planning how to incorporate practical considerations such as building and motivating

Pre-course work: Team Management Profile

Prior to the course, learners will complete their Belbin Team Preferences profile questionnaire and return it for the creation of a full report. The results will be given during the course.

Day 1

  • Introduction - Learners share their current knowledge and experience of team working, as well as more general information about themselves. This is done in a team activity which exposes current ‘default’ behaviours and highlights the difference between working hard and working smart
  • Team success factors - This session looks at the criteria for successful teams and begins to examine the behaviours expected that will honour team values. We benchmark our team against a ‘perfect model’, and discuss where teamwork fits within the achievement of our goals
  • Team self assessment - In this session we carry out an analysis of our own teams through a structured questionnaire. This exposes areas of strength and of weakness, and leads to initial thoughts about where to focus our future effort
  • Team project, Part 1 - We carry out the initial phase of a highly challenging team project which will demonstrate the diverse team roles in action and serve as a building block for the rest of the programmes

A full review of this first phase leads to the introduction of some of the models which will support us in leading more effectively, creating an Adult environment and removing conflict from some of the transactions we find difficult within our team.

Day 2

  • Team Development - In this session we explore our own team’s current stage of development, and the barriers which may be preventing it from moving to the next stage. We then generate solutions using a team brainstorm
  • Team Exercise, Part 2 - In the second phase of the team project we experiment with some of the ideas generated in the previous session. We learn how to evaluate team performance in the review session, and how to give and receive effective feedback which leads to a change in behaviour
  • Personal Review - In this session we reflect on the learning from Day 1, and discuss the implications for our own teams
  • Reviewing Performance - The key elements for success will now be explored for each individual’s own organisation. We look at how to review effectively with an individual so that they take responsibility for themselves. We use the GROW model to help an individual to acknowledge the need to adapt their behaviour in future
  • Communication Styles and Strategies - This session demonstrates a model of communication that can be applied to any team. The learners learn how to develop trust by talking to others in a specific way. An understanding of other people is vital to the success of a team and we explore the value of "seeking first to understand, then to be understood" (Covey)
  • Action Plans - The learners now conclude their action plans and decide how they will take the learning forward to make a difference in their own teams in their own organisations
