Matchett and Cisco Achieve a World First for the Training World

Is it possible for one trainer to deliver a live training session in six simultaneous global locations? Well, at Matchett we've just done it, using our client Cisco's own pioneering TelePresence technology.

The exciting, groundbreaking two-hour session was delivered from London to 53 people in Bangalore, Singapore, Ghanzai, Shanghai, Tokyo and Sydney. The pilot event was used to test how the technology would support behavioural learning and was a first for Cisco itself. The session, called 'Getting to Yes', was based on influencing skills, and concentrated on the Social Styles model and building rapport.

TelePresence allows people to connect over the network using state of the art conferencing technology, such that users are, to all intents and purposes, in the same room. The rooms typically have up to three large curved screens, the resolution of which is even sharper than on high-definition televisions, complemented by custom lighting and acoustics. Cisco, which has more than 200 TelePresence rooms typically used for meetings, estimates it is currently avoiding $100 million in yearly travel costs, and reducing its greenhouse gas emissions from air travel by 10 percent.

Feedback following the event from participants suggests the session fully demonstrated the amazing power and effectiveness of TelePresence as a medium for soft skills training delivery. It also had the spin-off benefit allowing them to 'meet' their peers, in many cases for the first time.

Matchett Principal Consultant, Michael Brown, who delivered the training, was delighted with the results, and the positive implications the technology could have for training in the future.

He said: "It was a privilege to be involved. The technology proved outstanding, the event was as seamless as a classroom-based session and the results speak for themselves. We set ourselves a huge challenge by running a session across 6 locations, but we seem to have pulled it off. We also chose a particularly 'soft' topic, and I wasn't sure how well it would resonate with a mixed group in Asia Pac. The response was so positive - it gives me the confidence to work with this medium on pretty well any topic you care to mention."

We at Matchett are lucky enough to have a long, close and successful working relationship with Cisco and being able to be involved in such an occasion, using their technology, sits well with our own pioneering endeavours to be at the forefront in developing new solutions in learning and development.

TelePresence could potentially offer classroom-style training for a tenth of the cost of traditional methods, if you take into account the logistics of getting tens of people, from different global locations, into one room for example. That is staggering. In itself, this clearly shows the importance of innovation: to develop solutions that ensure learning and development remain at the forefront in any corporate strategy and especially in these times of economic uncertainty and focus on reducing the carbon footprint."
