The annual performance appraisal is often perceived as a box ticking exercise by managers and can also be a big headache for HR teams. Managers often don’t understand the importance of performance management and the impact it has on the success of the business. The annual appraisal is only a part of what should be a continual management of performance throughout the year. As the Chief Executive of the Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM), Charles Elvin states in HR Magazine online, “Being able to appraise is a fundamental management skill.” A report published by The Institute for Employment Studies (IES) last year also stated that HR under-communicates the aims of performance management.
The appraisal processes put in place by HR teams are not necessarily bad; it’s the managers not understanding the importance of them that’s the problem.
