Knowledge Matters Forum Stresses The Human Element - May 2006

Matchett, The University of Warwick and The Hamsard Group present and demonstrate
Training professionals from central and local government, airlines, charity and technical organisations attended Matchett’s Knowledge Matters Forum on 16th May, held at Savoy Place in London. Speakers and product demonstrations were from Matchett, the University of Warwick and The Hamsard Group. The OutStart Participate knowledge management system was presented and demonstrated.

Knowledge management systems have powerful search mechanisms which make it easy for customers or people within the organisation to find answers to frequently asked questions; they also enable staff and customers to share knowledge held in subject matter experts’ heads, and ensure that information provided is consistent.

However, as knowledge management expert from the University of Warwick, Mark Cousen, pointed out: “Knowledge management is more about the people and the culture of the organisation than the tools used.” He described the challenges and the techniques tried in encouraging people to use the knowledge management system, once it has been installed.

Real-time visualisation using tree-mapping was introduced at the Forum by Panopticon, part of The Hamsard Group. This is an excellent way of increasing knowledge about complex data in one easily understandable picture.
