By examining the key issues associated with supervisory management people will have a better understanding of the requirements of taking on a supervisory role and challenges participants to assess whether they have the necessary attributes to make the transition successfully.
By the end of this course participants will be able to:

- Become more effective supervisors and managers
The course is introduced by the trainer and involves self-introduction by participants and trainer.
- Skills of exemplary supervisors allows participants to make their own assessment of their strengths and development needs which are shared, supportively challenged and compared with the requirements of successful supervisors
- Managing change gets participants to discuss the causes of change and complete a case study to create a structured model for managing change
- Leadership and styles examines the concept of leadership. Participants practise making leadership decisions through an enjoyable interactive model from which they identify their individual leadership styles
- Motivating staff – Participants examine motivation and the gaps between perceptions of people’s motivation and their reality
- Supervisory problem solving – Overnight, participants think carefully about a work-related supervisory problem they have for presentation to the group on day two. The following day, participants present to the group examples of work-related supervisory problems. All participants are thereby involved in a variety of real life problems and offer their own inputs to support solutions
- Counselling colleagues empowers participants to develop a counselling model and discuss effective ways of handling common problem.
- Setting effective objectives discusses the importance of objectives and how they can be positive and motivational. Participants are introduced to models for setting effective objectives to apply to their development areas
- Team working – After recognising problems in making teams work, and establishing their own predominant team roles, participants watch a video to identify essential behaviours for good team players. They then work in teams to reflect on their identified team roles
- Planning and implementing introduces the basics of planning and apply the process to a team-based exercise
- Meetings – Participants examine how to get the best out of meetings
- Decision making & delegating examines other people’s failed decisions minutely. But how good are we at making decisions?
- Effective selecting introduces participants to essential elements in effective selecting which will help them when faced with conducting their first selection process
Finally there is an action plan & review where participants review the three days and examine their learning against their initial expectations. Using the completed session reviews, everyone completes an individual action plan for use at work.
